Towards the top of the century Prime Ministers of Scottish descent included William Gladstone, and the Earl of Rosebery. Historian Neil Davidson notes “after 1746 there was an entirely new degree of participation by Scots in political life, particularly outdoors Scotland.” Davidson also states “removed from being ‘peripheral’ to the British economic system, Scotland – or more exactly, the Lowlands – lay at its core.” The deposed Jacobite Stuart claimants had remained popular within the Highlands and north-east, significantly amongst non-Presbyterians, including Roman Catholics and Episcopalian Protestants. However, two major Jacobite risings launched in 1715 and 1745 failed to remove the House of Hanover from the British throne.
